School House Apartments - Beulah, ND |
Library Square - Mandan, ND |
Co-partnering with MetroPlains Development, CommunityWorks has assisted in the development of multi-family projects. These projects not only created new housing units, but also helped to revitalize the hearts of their communities.
In 1999, CommunityWorks and MetroPlains completed the School House Apartments in Beulah. The $2 million project helped to solve two problems for the community. First, it preserved the structure of a historic schoolhouse building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the same time, this project also created 28 new rental units from the former classrooms and remodeled the interior. The School House Apartments received the Top 100 Best Practices Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Governor's Best Multi-Family Project Award in 1999.
The CommunityWorks-MetroPlains partnership reunited in Mandan to develop Library Square, a new $5 million project that provided 48 units of housing for low-income elderly residents of the community. Again, the project not only filled a need for more housing units for the elderly of the community, but also helped Mandan overcome the effects of an underground diesel plume and became the cornerstone for its downtown redevelopment plan. Library Square received the Beryl Sparrow Community Impact Award from Fannie Mae in 2004 and the Champion of Affordable Housing Award from the ND Housing Finance Agency in 2005.
